Julian Fellowes revealed his closet Irish Republican sympathies when he spoke at yesterday’s launch of the third series of Downton Abbey at Berkeley Street’s Mayfair Hotel. He observed that the storyline featuring Branson, the Irish chauffeur with Republican leanings, who whisked off Lady Sybil from the clutches of her family, was dear to his heart.

“It may come as a surprise that someone like me was brought up very much on the Home Rule and freedom side,” he said on the subject, which features heavily in the new series. Viewers can also look forward to a bedroom scene between Branson and Lady Sybil when they are invited to the wedding of Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens) and Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery).
