Ah, Wizard…

Watching The Wizard of Oz. Because I love it.

And becaues it was on TNT last night, but I didn’t get to see all of it (I was at T’s and we were watching other movies), and my whistle twas wetted. 🙂

Some factoids:

  • MGM execs wanted to cut Over the Rainbow because they didn’t think it was dignified for Judy to be singing in a barnyard.
  • Billie Burke (Glinda) was married to Florenz Ziegfeld.
  • Margaret Hamilton was burned when she left Muchkinland. Her makeup had copper in it, and it caught in the fire. After that, she refused to do any more stunts involving fire.
  • Judy Garland’s daughter Liza M. married the Tin Man’s son.
  • The horse of many colors was done by adding jello powder to the horse. They had to shoot the scenes quickly, because the horse kept liking off the powder.
  • Terry, the dog playing Toto, got paid more than the munchkins.
  • In the original story, the shoes are silver, but red showed up better in Technicolor, so the switch was made.
  • Three directors directed the film: King Vidor (Kansas sequences); George Cukor (who mostly did re-shots, but also is responsible for how Dorothy looks. Originally she had pouffy blonde hair and looked a lot more sophisticated. Cukor toned down the makeup, ditched the wig, and told Judy Garland to act naturally.) Victor Fleming did most of the movie. (Both Flemming and Cukor were also involved in Gone With the Wind
